Enoch swears by the glory of the Great One that he knows a secret. He has read heavenly books and found that goodness, joy, and glory are prepared for the righteous. Their spirits will live and rejoice, and their memory will last forever. The sinners, however, will face woe when they die. They will be sent to a place of darkness, chains, and burning flame where there is great judgement. Enoch tells the righteous not to say that they have suffered much in life. He acknowledges their struggles but assures them that their lot is better than the living. He also mentions that they cried out for help but were not heard. The rulers did not remove the yoke of those who oppressed them.
I promise you, the righteous, by the glory of the Great, Honoured, and Powerful One who rules over all, and by His immense greatness, I swear to you:
I understand a secret, and I have studied the heavenly records. I have also seen the holy books, and I have found written and recorded in them the following:
All goodness, joy, and glory are prepared for you, and written down for the spirits of those who have died in righteousness. You will receive great rewards for your hard work, and your fate will be far better than that of the living.
The spirits of those who have died in righteousness will live and rejoice, and their spirits will not be destroyed. Their memory will remain before the Great One forever, throughout all generations. So, do not be afraid of the insults of the wicked.
Here is the rewritten verse: "Trouble is coming to you, you sinners, when you die. If you die still full of your sins, and those like you say about you, 'The sinners had it good; they experienced everything they wanted in life.'"
They lived and died in wealth and comfort, never experiencing hardship or violence. They were honored in life, and no judgment was brought against them.
Here is the rewritten verse in simple modern English: You should know that their souls will be sent down to the place of the dead. They will be very unhappy in their great suffering.
Here is the rewritten verse in simple modern English: You will be sent into darkness, chains, and burning fire where there is severe punishment. This great punishment will happen to all people for all time. You are in trouble because you will never have peace.
We shouldn't say about the righteous and good people who are still alive: "During our difficult times, we've worked hard and faced many troubles. We've encountered a lot of evil, been worn out, and our numbers have dwindled. Our spirit is weak."
We have been destroyed and found no one to help us, not even with a word. We have been tortured and have no hope of seeing life from one day to the next.
We thought we would be leaders, but we ended up at the bottom. We worked hard but got nothing from our efforts. Now we are like food for the wicked and unjust, and they have put a heavy burden on us.
They ruled over us, those who hated and struck us. We bowed down to those who hated us, but they showed us no mercy.
We wanted to leave them behind to find peace and safety, but we couldn't find any place to hide where we'd be safe from them.
We complained to the leaders during our suffering, and cried out against those who were destroying us. But they didn't pay attention to our complaints and wouldn't listen to our pleas.
They supported those who stole from us, ate us up, and made our numbers small. They hid the wrongs done to us and did not take off the heavy load of those who devoured, scattered, and killed us. They hid these murders and forgot that they had raised their hands against us.
