Just like Sodom and Gomorrah and the other nearby cities, who let themselves do bad things like having sex with people they shouldn't and wanting others they didn't know, they are shown as a warning. They now suffer from a very bad fire that never goes away.
"Gird yourselves, and lament, ye priests: howl, ye ministers of the altar: come, lie all night in sackcloth, ye ministers of my God: for the meat offering and the drink offering is withholden from the house of your God."
Put on robes of mourning, priests, and cry: pray, religious leaders, wail: spend all night wearing sackcloth, servants of my God: because the offerings of food and drink are not allowed in God's home.
"As they gather silver, and brass, and iron, and lead, and tin, into the midst of the furnace, to blow the fire upon it, to melt it; so will I gather you in mine anger and in my fury, and I will leave you there, and melt you."
Just like they collect metals like silver, brass, iron, lead, and tin, and put them into a furnace to heat them up until they melt, I will also bring you together in my anger and rage. Then, I will leave you there and let you melt away.
"Behold ye the earth, and give heed to the things which take place upon it from first to last, how steadfast they are, how none of the things upon earth change, but all the works of God appear to you."
Look at the earth and pay attention to what happens on it from beginning to end. See how stable everything is, how nothing on earth changes, but all the works of God are revealed to you.
"The murder of +their+ beloved ones shall +they+ see, and over the destruction of +their+ children shall +they+ lament, and shall make supplication unto eternity, but mercy and peace shall ye not attain."'"
They will witness the murder of their loved ones and mourn the destruction of their children. They will plead for mercy forever, but they will never find it or experience peace.
"And they shall go up and tread under foot the land of His elect ones, [And the land of His elect ones shall be before them a threshing-floor and a highway:] 7 But the city of my righteous shall be a hindrance to their horses. And they shall begin to fight among themselves, And their right hand shall be strong against themselves, And a man shall not know his brother, Nor a son his father or his mother, Till there be no number of the corpses through their slaughter, And their punishment be not in vain. 8 In those days Sheol shall open its jaws, And they shall be swallowed up therein And their destruction shall be at an end; Sheol shall devour the sinners in the presence of the elect.' LVII. The Return from the Dispersion."
They will invade and trample the land of God's chosen people. The land of God's chosen ones will be like a threshing floor and a highway for them. But the city of my righteous people will block their horses. They will start fighting among themselves, and their own strength will turn against them. People won't recognize their brothers, nor will sons recognize their fathers or mothers. There will be so many dead that no one can count them, and their punishment will not be in vain. In those days, the grave will open its mouth, and they will be swallowed up in it. Their destruction will be complete; the grave will devour the sinners in the presence of the righteous.
