John 6

After these things Jesus went over the sea of Galilee, which is the sea of Tiberias.

After that, Jesus crossed the Galilee Sea, also known as the Tiberias Sea.

And a great multitude followed him, because they saw his miracles which he did on them that were diseased.

Many people followed him since they saw the amazing things he did to heal sick people.

And Jesus went up into a mountain, and there he sat with his disciples.

Jesus climbed a mountain, then sat there with his followers.

And the passover, a feast of the Jews, was nigh.

The Passover festival, an important Jewish celebration, was soon to begin.

When Jesus then lifted up his eyes, and saw a great company come unto him, he saith unto Philip, Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat?

When Jesus looked up and saw many people coming to him, he asked Philip, "Where can we get bread so these people can eat?"

And this he said to prove him: for he himself knew what he would do.

He said that to test him, because he already knew what he was going to do.

Philip answered him, Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may take a little.

Philip replied, "Two hundred pennies worth of bread isn't enough for everyone to have a small piece."

One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, saith unto him,

One of Jesus' followers, named Andrew, who was also the brother of Simon Peter, talked to him.

There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many?

There's a boy with five small breads and two tiny fish, but how will they be enough for everyone?

And Jesus said, Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand.

Jesus told them to have the men take their seats. There was plenty of grass in that area, so they sat down. There were roughly five thousand men in total.

And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would.

Jesus received the bread, gave thanks, and then gave it to his disciples. The disciples then shared the bread with those sitting down. They did the same with the fish, giving as much as people wanted.

When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost.

When they finished eating, Jesus told his followers, "Collect the leftovers so nothing is wasted."

Therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above unto them that had eaten.

So, they collected the leftovers, put them in twelve baskets, from the five barley breads. There was still plenty left for those who ate.

Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world.

Then the men, after seeing Jesus' miracle, said, "This is truly the prophet who will come to the world."

When Jesus therefore perceived that they would come and take him by force, to make him a king, he departed again into a mountain himself alone.

When Jesus saw that people wanted to forcefully make him a king, he went up a mountain by himself.

And when even was now come, his disciples went down unto the sea,

And when evening arrived, his followers went to the sea.

And entered into a ship, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was now dark, and Jesus was not come to them.

They got on a boat and sailed towards Capernaum. It was getting dark, but Jesus hadn't arrived yet.

And the sea arose by reason of a great wind that blew.

The sea got big waves because of a strong wind that blew.

So when they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing nigh unto the ship: and they were afraid.

After they had rowed about 50 to 70 stadium lengths, they saw Jesus walking on the water towards their boat, and they were scared.

But he saith unto them, It is I; be not afraid.

But he tells them, "It's me, don't be scared."

Then they willingly received him into the ship: and immediately the ship was at the land whither they went.

Then, they happily let him join them on the boat. As soon as he got on, the boat arrived at their desired destination.

The day following, when the people which stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was none other boat there, save that one whereinto his disciples were entered, and that Jesus went not with his disciples into the boat, but that his disciples were gone away alone;

The next day, when the people on the other side of the sea saw no other boats except the one with Jesus' disciples, and they noticed that Jesus didn't join his disciples in the boat, but remained behind, they realized that his disciples had left by themselves.

(Howbeit there came other boats from Tiberias nigh unto the place where they did eat bread, after that the Lord had given thanks:)

But other boats from Tiberias arrived near the place where they ate bread after Jesus had given thanks.

When the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, neither his disciples, they also took shipping, and came to Capernaum, seeking for Jesus.

When the people realized Jesus and his followers were gone, they got on boats to go to Capernaum to find Jesus.

And when they had found him on the other side of the sea, they said unto him, Rabbi, when camest thou hither?

When they found him across the sea, they asked him, "Teacher, when did you get here?"

Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled.

Jesus told them, "What I'm about to say is true. You are looking for me not because of the amazing things I did, but because you ate the bread and got full."

Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.

Don't work for food that will spoil, but for food that lasts forever. The Son of Man will give this eternal food, as God the Father has approved Him.

Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?

They asked him, "What can we do to perform God's works?"

Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.

Jesus replied, "God's work is for you to believe in the one He has sent."

They said therefore unto him, What sign shewest thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? what dost thou work?

They asked him, "What sign can you show us so we can see it and believe you? What do you do?"

Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.

Our ancestors ate a special food called manna in the desert. It was like bread that came from the sky.

Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.

Then Jesus told them, "Really truly, I'm saying this to you, Moses didn't give you that bread from heaven. But my Father gives you the real bread from heaven."

For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.

God's bread comes from heaven and gives life to everyone on Earth.

Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread.

Then they asked him, "Lord, always give us this bread."

And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.

Jesus told them, "I am the source of eternal life. Anyone who comes to me will never be hungry, and anyone who trusts me will never be thirsty."

But I said unto you, That ye also have seen me, and believe not.

But I told you, even though you've seen me, you still don't believe.

All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.

Whatever the Father gives me will come to me, and I won't reject anyone who comes to me.

For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.

I came from heaven not to do what I want, but what the one who sent me wants.

And this is the Father’s will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.

This means God wants me to do something. He sent me to make sure I don't lose any of the things he has given me. Instead, I will bring them back in the future.

And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.

This means that God wants everyone who sees and trusts in Jesus to have eternal life, and Jesus will bring them back to life on the final day.

The Jews then murmured at him, because he said, I am the bread which came down from heaven.

The Jews complained to him because he claimed to be the food that came from the sky.

And they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? how is it then that he saith, I came down from heaven?

They asked, "Isn't this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose parents we know? How can he say he came down from heaven?"

Jesus therefore answered and said unto them, Murmur not among yourselves.

Jesus replied, "Don't argue among yourselves."

No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.

A person cannot come to me unless the Father sends them; and on the final day, I will bring them back to life.

It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.

This verse says that God teaches everyone, and those who listen and learn from the Father will come to me.

Not that any man hath seen the Father, save he which is of God, he hath seen the Father.

This means that no person has ever seen God the Father, except for someone chosen by God, and that person has seen God.

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.

Absolutely, absolutely, I tell you, whoever believes in me has eternal life.

I am that bread of life.

I am the bread of life.

Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead.

Your ancestors ate manna in the desert and then passed away.

This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die.

This is the bread from heaven that people can eat so they won't die.

I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.

I am the living bread from heaven. Eating this bread means eternal life. The bread is my flesh, given to bring life to the world.

The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat?

The Jews argued among themselves, asking, how can this man offer us his flesh to eat?

Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.

Then Jesus told them, "I promise you the truth, if you don't eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you don't have any life within you."

Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.

Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and on the last day, I will bring them back to life.

For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.

My body is real food, and my blood is real drink.

He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.

Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me, and I live in them.

As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me.

Just like the real Father sent me, and I live because of Him: anyone who eats me will also live through me.

This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever.

This is the bread from heaven. It's different from the manna your ancestors ate and then passed away. Whoever eats this bread will live forever.

These things said he in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum.

He said this in the synagogue while teaching in Capernaum.

Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, This is an hard saying; who can hear it?

So, many of Jesus' followers, after hearing this, said, "This teaching is difficult to understand. Who can listen to it?"

When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples murmured at it, he said unto them, Doth this offend you?

When Jesus saw that his followers complained about something, he asked them, "Does this bother you?"

What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before?

And if you see the Son of Man going up to where he was before, what then will you do?

It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

The Spirit gives life; the body doesn't help at all: the words I tell you are from the Spirit, and they bring life.

But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him.

But some of you don't believe. Jesus knew from the start who didn't believe and who would betray him.

And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father.

He said, "That's why I told you: nobody can come to me unless my Father gives them permission."

From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.

Starting from that point, many of his followers left and didn't walk with him anymore.

Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away?

Then Jesus asked the twelve, "Will you leave too?"

Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.

Then Simon Peter asked him, "Lord, who else can we go to? You have the words that lead to eternal life."

And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.

We truly believe and know that you are the Messiah, the son of the living God.

Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil?

Jesus replied, "Haven't I picked all twelve of you, and one of you isn't good but bad?"

He spake of Judas Iscariot the son of Simon: for he it was that should betray him, being one of the twelve.

He talked about Judas Iscariot, son of Simon. Judas was the one who would betray him, and he was one of the twelve followers.
