Exodus 33

And the LORD said unto Moses, Depart, and go up hence, thou and the people which thou hast brought up out of the land of Egypt, unto the land which I sware unto Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, Unto thy seed will I give it:

And God told Moses, "Leave and take everyone you brought from Egypt to the land I promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob for their descendants. It's their inheritance."

And I will send an angel before thee; and I will drive out the Canaanite, the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite:

I will send an angel to go ahead of you, and I will remove the people called Canaanites, Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites.

Unto a land flowing with milk and honey: for I will not go up in the midst of thee; for thou art a stiffnecked people: lest I consume thee in the way.

To a land with lots of milk and honey; because I won't be with you along the way, as you are stubborn people, or else I might destroy you on our journey.

And when the people heard these evil tidings, they mourned: and no man did put on him his ornaments.

When the people heard the bad news, they were sad and didn't wear their jewelry.

For the LORD had said unto Moses, Say unto the children of Israel, Ye are a stiffnecked people: I will come up into the midst of thee in a moment, and consume thee: therefore now put off thy ornaments from thee, that I may know what to do unto thee.

The LORD told Moses, "Tell the Israelites, they are stubborn. I'll suddenly be among them and destroy them. So, remove your decorations so I can plan how to act."

And the children of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments by the mount Horeb.

The Israelite kids removed their jewelry near Mount Horeb.

And Moses took the tabernacle, and pitched it without the camp, afar off from the camp, and called it the Tabernacle of the congregation. And it came to pass, that every one which sought the LORD went out unto the tabernacle of the congregation, which was without the camp.

Moses set up the tent for worship far away from the main area, and called it "The Meeting Place Tent." After this, anyone who wanted to find God would go to this tent outside the camp.

And it came to pass, when Moses went out unto the tabernacle, that all the people rose up, and stood every man at his tent door, and looked after Moses, until he was gone into the tabernacle.

When Moses went outside the tent, everyone stood at their tents and watched him go into the tabernacle.

And it came to pass, as Moses entered into the tabernacle, the cloudy pillar descended, and stood at the door of the tabernacle, and the Lord talked with Moses.

When Moses went into the tent, a cloudy pillar came down and stood at the entrance. Then, God spoke to Moses.

And all the people saw the cloudy pillar stand at the tabernacle door: and all the people rose up and worshipped, every man in his tent door.

Everyone saw a cloud pillar at the tabernacle entrance, so they all stood up and worshiped, each person at their tent door.

And the LORD spake unto Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend. And he turned again into the camp: but his servant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, departed not out of the tabernacle.

The LORD talked directly with Moses like friends do, and then Moses went back to the camp. However, his assistant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, stayed inside the tent.

And Moses said unto the LORD, See, thou sayest unto me, Bring up this people: and thou hast not let me know whom thou wilt send with me. Yet thou hast said, I know thee by name, and thou hast also found grace in my sight.

Moses asked the Lord, "You want me to lead these people, but you haven't told me who will help me. You know my name and have favor towards me."

Now therefore, I pray thee, if I have found grace in thy sight, shew me now thy way, that I may know thee, that I may find grace in thy sight: and consider that this nation is thy people.

So now, if you think I'm doing well in your eyes, please show me the way to follow you. This will help me understand you better and gain your favor. Also, remember that this nation belongs to you.

And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.

He said, "I'll be with you, and I'll give you peace."

And he said unto him, If thy presence go not with me, carry us not up hence.

He said, "If you don't come with me, don't take us there."

For wherein shall it be known here that I and thy people have found grace in thy sight? is it not in that thou goest with us? so shall we be separated, I and thy people, from all the people that are upon the face of the earth.

How can others know that you and your people have received God's favor? It is when God goes with us. Then, we will be different from all other people on Earth.

And the LORD said unto Moses, I will do this thing also that thou hast spoken: for thou hast found grace in my sight, and I know thee by name.

And God told Moses, "I'll do what you asked. You have my favor, and I know who you are by name."

And he said, I beseech thee, shew me thy glory.

He asked, Please, show me your greatness.

And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy.

He said, "I'll show you my kindness, tell you about the Lord, and be kind to whoever I choose to be kind to. I'll also show mercy to whoever I decide to show mercy."

And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.

He said, "You cannot see my face because no person can see me and survive."

And the LORD said, Behold, there is a place by me, and thou shalt stand upon a rock:

And God said, Look, there's a spot next to me, and you will stand on a rock.

And it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a clift of the rock, and will cover thee with my hand while I pass by:

And it will happen that as my glory goes by, I will hide you in a hidden part of the rock and protect you with my hand while I go by.

And I will take away mine hand, and thou shalt see my back parts: but my face shall not be seen.

I will remove my hand, and you'll see the back parts, but my face won't be visible.
