2 Timothy 1

Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus,

Paul, a messenger of Jesus Christ as planned by God, based on the promise of living that comes from Christ Jesus.

To Timothy, my dearly beloved son: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

To Timothy, my dear child: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and Jesus Christ our Savior.

I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience, that without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day;

I thank God, who I've always served with a clear conscience inherited from my ancestors, that I never stop praying for you day and night.

Greatly desiring to see thee, being mindful of thy tears, that I may be filled with joy;

I really want to see you, remembering your tears, so I can be happy.

When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.

When I think about the true faith you have, which came from your grandma Lois and your mom Eunice, I am convinced you have it too.

Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.

So, I remind you to use the ability from God that's inside you, which I gave you by laying my hands on you.

For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

God hasn't given us a fearful spirit; instead, He has given us strength, love, and a clear mind.

Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God;

Don't be embarrassed by the teachings of our Lord or my imprisonment. Instead, share in the hardships of the gospel message, as empowered by God's strength.

Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,

Who has saved us and chosen us for a special mission, not based on what we have done, but based on God's plan and kindness given through Jesus Christ, which he gave us long before the world was created.

But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:

But now, our Savior Jesus Christ has shown that he has defeated death and has brought the understanding of eternal life through the good news.

Whereunto I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles.

I am assigned to be a preacher, an apostle, and a teacher to non-Jewish people.

For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

I endure these difficulties because of my belief. I'm not embarrassed about it. I know who I trust and believe that he can protect what I've given to him until a specific day comes.

Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.

Keep firmly to the true teachings you've learned from me, based on faith and love found in Christ Jesus.

That good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us.

Keep that good thing given to you with the help of the Holy Spirit living within us.

This thou knowest, that all they which are in Asia be turned away from me; of whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes.

You know this: everyone in Asia has left me, including Phygellus and Hermogenes.

The Lord give mercy unto the house of Onesiphorus; for he oft refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain:

The Lord gives mercy to Onesiphorus' family because he frequently helped me and wasn't embarrassed by my shackles.

But, when he was in Rome, he sought me out very diligently, and found me.

But in Rome, he searched for me very carefully and found me.

The Lord grant unto him that he may find mercy of the Lord in that day: and in how many things he ministered unto me at Ephesus, thou knowest very well.

May the Lord give him mercy on that day; you know well all the ways he helped me in Ephesus.
