Maya Hero Twins

Xbalanque (also spelled Xbalanqué) is a central figure in the Popol Vuh, the sacred text of the K'iche' Maya people of Guatemala. He is one of the Hero Twins, along with his twin brother Hunahpu, who are central characters in the mythological narratives of the Maya civilization. The name Xbalanque is derived from the K'iche' language and can be translated as "Jaguar Sun" or "Sun Jaguar." In other relevant languages, the name is often transliterated as Xbalanque in Spanish and Xbalanque in French. The Hebrew translation is not directly applicable as the name originates from a different linguistic and cultural context. Xbalanque and Hunahpu are celebrated for their cunning and bravery, particularly in their defeat of the lords of Xibalba, the Maya underworld. Their adventures and triumphs symbolize the victory of light over darkness and the renewal of life, themes that are deeply embedded in Maya cosmology and religious practices.
