Vastu Shastra, also known as Vastu Vidya (Sanskrit: वास्तु शास्त्र, वास्तु विद्या), is an ancient Indian traditional system of architecture and design that aligns structures with natural forces to create harmonious and prosperous living spaces. The term "Vastu" translates to "dwelling" or "house" in Sanskrit, while "Shastra" means "science" or "knowledge." In Hebrew, it can be translated as חוכמת הבניין המסורתית ההודית (Chochmat HaBinyan HaMesoretit HaHindit). Vastu Shastra is deeply rooted in Hindu and Buddhist traditions and incorporates principles of direction, space, and geometry to promote well-being and prosperity. It is often compared to Feng Shui in Chinese culture, as both systems aim to harmonize individuals with their environment. Astrology, or Jyotish in Sanskrit, plays a significant role in Vastu Shastra, as it helps determine auspicious times for construction, the placement of rooms, and the orientation of buildings based on celestial influences. In Arabic, Vastu Shastra is known as علم الهندسة التقليدية الهندي (Ilm Al-Hindasah Al-Taqleediyah Al-Hindiyah), and in Hindi, it is referred to as वास्तु शास्त्र (Vastu Shastra). The practice of Vastu Shastra continues to influence modern architecture and interior design in India and among the Indian diaspora.
