Theseus (Greek: Θησεύς) was a mythical king and founder-hero of Athens. In Greek mythology, Theseus was known for his great strength and bravery, and was credited with unifying Attica under the city of Athens. He was the son of Aegeus, king of Athens, and Aethra, daughter of Pittheus, king of Troezen. Theseus was a central figure in the tales surrounding the founding of the Athenian state and was one of the most popular heroes of Attic legend. His most famous adventure was his journey to Crete to slay the Minotaur, a monstrous creature that was half-man and half-bull. This story is often interpreted as an allegory for Theseus's political unification of Attica. In Hebrew, Theseus is known as תזאוס (Theseus). In Latin, he is referred to as Theseus, and in French, he is known as Thésée.
