Stramonium, commonly known as Datura stramonium, is an annual, flowering plant of the nightshade family, Solanaceae. It is known by various names, including jimsonweed, thornapple, and devil's snare. The plant is native to North America but has spread to temperate and tropical regions worldwide. Datura stramonium is notorious for its psychoactive properties due to the presence of tropane alkaloids such as scopolamine, hyoscyamine, and atropine, which can cause hallucinations, delirium, and other severe neurological effects if ingested. In Hebrew, it is known as דטורה (Datūra). In Spanish, it is called estramonio, and in French, it is referred to as stramoine. The plant has a long history of use in traditional medicine and rituals but is highly toxic and potentially deadly if misused. Its seeds and leaves have been employed in various cultural practices, but caution is advised due to its potent and unpredictable effects.
