Spacecolony

A space colony, also known as a space habitat or orbital colony, is a theoretical construct for a large artificial habitat located in outer space. The concept involves creating self-sustaining environments capable of supporting human life for extended periods, often envisioned as a solution to overpopulation, resource depletion, or as a stepping stone for further space exploration. In Hebrew, a space colony is referred to as מושבה בחלל (moshava bakhalal). In other languages, it is known as Kolonie im Weltraum in German, colonie spatiale in French, and colonia espacial in Spanish. Key contextual information includes the need for advanced life support systems, such as closed-loop ecosystems for air, water, and food production, as well as radiation shielding and artificial gravity to ensure the health and well-being of inhabitants. Proposals for space colonies have ranged from O'Neill cylinders to Bernal spheres, each offering unique designs to address the challenges of long-term space habitation.
