Oshun (pronounced oh-SHOON) is an Orisha, or deity, in the Yoruba religious tradition of West Africa. She is often associated with love, beauty, fertility, and rivers, and is considered one of the most revered and influential Orishas. In the Yoruba language, her name is Òṣun, which translates to "river of love" or "sweet, fresh water." In Hebrew, her name can be translated as נהר האהבה (Nahar HaAhava), meaning "river of love." In Spanish, she is known as Oshún, and in Portuguese, she is referred to as Oxum. Oshun is often depicted as a sensual, nurturing figure who embodies the life-giving properties of water. She is also associated with diplomacy, art, and creativity. In the African diaspora, particularly in cultures influenced by the Yoruba tradition such as Candomblé in Brazil and Santería in Cuba, Oshun continues to be a significant and revered deity.
