A Mars rover is an automated motor vehicle that propels itself across the surface of the planet Mars upon arrival. Rovers have several advantages over stationary landers: they examine more territory, and they can be directed to interesting features, they can place themselves in sunny positions to weather dust storms, and they can advance the knowledge of how to perform very remote robotic vehicle control. While the Mars rover is a type of robotic rover, any manned, unmanned vehicle designed to operate on the surface of Mars can also be called the Mars rover. Mars rover in Hebrew is רובר מרס (pronounced: rover mars). In French, it is called rover martien, in German Marsrover, in Spanish rover marciano, and in Japanese 火星探査車 (pronounced: kasei tankisha).
