John Paul Jones (born John Paul; July 6, 1747 – July 18, 1792) was a Scottish sailor and United States Navy officer. He became famous for his actions during the American Revolutionary War. Jones is often regarded as the "Father of the American Navy." The name "John Paul Jones" is a translation of his original Scottish name, Seonaidh MacPhàil, which translates to ג'ון פול ג'ונס in Hebrew. In French, he is known as Jean Paul Jones, and in German, he is referred to as John Paul Jones. Jones's most famous quote, "I have not yet begun to fight," encapsulates his tenacious spirit during the Battle of Flamborough Head. His naval exploits, particularly his victories against the British, solidified his legacy as a naval hero in American history.
