Inner gnosis, also known as gnosis or self-knowledge, refers to the spiritual knowledge or insight gained through direct, personal experience, rather than through external teachings or doctrines. The term originates from the Greek word γνῶσις (gnōsis), which translates to "knowledge" or "understanding." In Hebrew, this concept can be approximated as דעת פנימית (da'at penimit). Inner gnosis is often associated with mystical traditions, such as Gnosticism, where it signifies a profound, intuitive understanding of one's true nature and the divine. In Sufism, a similar concept is known as ma'rifa (معرفة), while in Hinduism, it aligns with jnana (ज्ञान). This inner knowledge is believed to lead to spiritual awakening and enlightenment, transcending the limitations of the ego and the physical world. Practices such as meditation, contemplation, and introspection are often employed to cultivate inner gnosis, fostering a deeper connection with the self and the divine.
