Ingenuity (helicopter)

The Ingenuity helicopter, also known as the Mars Helicopter, is a small, autonomous rotorcraft that is part of NASA's Mars 2020 mission. It is designed to demonstrate the feasibility of powered, controlled flight on another planet. Ingenuity, which translates to חללית מרס in Hebrew, Helicóptero Ingenuity in Spanish, and Ingenuity-Hubschrauber in German, is a technology demonstration project aimed at testing the potential of aerial exploration on Mars. Weighing just 1.8 kilograms (4 pounds), the helicopter is equipped with two counter-rotating blades that spin at about 2,400 revolutions per minute (rpm), much faster than a helicopter on Earth due to the thin Martian atmosphere. Ingenuity was deployed from the Perseverance rover and successfully completed its first powered flight on April 19, 2021, marking the first powered, controlled flight on another planet. The helicopter's success paves the way for future aerial exploration of Mars and other celestial bodies.

Ingenuity (helicopter)
Ingenuity, nicknamed Ginny, is an autonomous NASA helicopter that operated on Mars from 2021 to 2024 as part of the Mars 2020 mission. Ingenuity made its first flight on 19 April 2021, demonstrating that flight is possible in the extremely thin atmosphere of Mars, and becoming the first aircraft to conduct a powered and controlled extraterrestrial flight. It was designed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in collaboration with AeroVironment, NASA's Ames Research Center and Langley Research Center with some components supplied by Lockheed Martin Space, Qualcomm, and SolAero.
