Epimetheus is a figure from Greek mythology, known as the god of afterthought or hindsight. His name is derived from the Greek words epí (ἐπί), meaning "after," and metis (μέτις), meaning "cunning intelligence" or "wisdom." In Hebrew, he is known as אפימטאוס (Epimta'us). Epimetheus is often contrasted with his brother Prometheus, who is known for his forethought. According to Hesiod's Theogony, Epimetheus was the one who accepted the gift of Pandora from Zeus, which ultimately led to the release of evils into the world. In Latin, he is referred to as Epimeteus, and in French as Épiméthée. The asteroid 1810 Epimetheus and one of Saturn's moons are also named after him, reflecting his significance in both mythology and astronomy.
Brother of Atlas, Menoetius and Prometheus
In Greek mythology, Epimetheus is the brother of Prometheus, the pair serving "as representatives of mankind". Both sons of the Titan Iapetus, while Prometheus ("foresight") is ingeniously clever, Epimetheus ("hindsight") is inept and foolish. In some accounts of the myth, Epimetheus unleashes the unforeseen troubles in Pandora's box.
