Chemtrails is a term used to describe the alleged chemical trails left in the sky by aircraft, distinct from the normal condensation trails (contrails) formed by the condensation of water vapor from aircraft engine exhaust. The term is derived from "chemical trails" and is used by proponents of the chemtrail conspiracy theory, which posits that these trails are the result of deliberate spraying of harmful or otherwise significant chemicals for purposes undisclosed to the general public, such as weather modification, population control, or other clandestine programs. The term chemtrails is not recognized by atmospheric scientists, who maintain that the trails seen in the sky are merely ordinary contrails, which can persist under certain atmospheric conditions. In Hebrew, the term is translated as מסלולי כימיקלים (mesilotei kimikalim). In other languages, it is known as Chemtrails in Spanish, Chemtrails in French, and Chemtrails in German. The phenomenon has been extensively debunked by scientific organizations, including NASA and the Environmental Protection Agency, which have stated that chemtrails do not exist and that the trails observed are simply contrails.
