Charles Gordon, also known as Gordon of Khartoum or Chinese Gordon, (28 January 1833 – 26 January 1885) was a British Army officer and administrator. He is best known for his campaigns in China, his role in the "Ever Victorious Army" during the Taiping Rebellion, and his defense of the city of Khartoum in Sudan against the Mahdist forces. Gordon's leadership and controversial decisions during the Siege of Khartoum made him a notable figure in 19th-century military history. In Hebrew, he is referred to as צ'ארלס גורדון. In Chinese, he is known as 戈登 (Gēdēng) or 戈登將軍 (Gēdēng Jiāngjūn). Gordon's legacy is complex, with both admirers and critics debating his strategic choices and personal convictions.
