Cape Canaveral, also known as Cape Kennedy from 1963 to 1973, is a cape in Brevard County, Florida, United States, located on the Atlantic coast. It is one of the most historic and well-known launch sites for spacecraft in the world. The area is managed by the United States Air Force as part of the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station and is adjacent to NASA's Kennedy Space Center. The name "Cape Canaveral" comes from the Spanish Cabo Cañaveral, meaning "Cape Canebrake" or "Cape Reed." In Hebrew, it is known as מישור קייפ קנברל (Mishor Keip Kanveral). The cape is located approximately 35 miles (56 km) east of Orlando. It has been the launch site for many significant space missions, including the first American satellite, Explorer 1, in 1958, and the first crewed spaceflight by an American, Alan Shepard's Freedom 7 mission in 1961. The site continues to be a primary launch location for both government and commercial space missions.
