Oxum (also spelled Oshun or Ochun) is an Orisha, or deity, in the Yoruba religious tradition of West Africa. She is often associated with love, beauty, fertility, and the life-giving properties of fresh water, such as rivers. Oxum is also connected to diplomacy, sensuality, and the arts, particularly music and dance. In Yoruba mythology, she is often depicted as a beautiful woman adorned with gold jewelry and yellow clothing, which are her sacred colors. The translation of Oxum to Hebrew is אוקסום (Oksum), though this deity is not part of Hebrew or Jewish religious traditions. In Portuguese, her name is often spelled Oxum, reflecting her significance in the Afro-Brazilian religions of Candomblé and Umbanda. In these traditions, she is sometimes syncretized with the Catholic saint Our Lady of the Rosary. Oxum's worship involves offerings of honey, which is considered sacred to her, and rituals that celebrate love and the nurturing aspects of water.
