anhur

Anhur (also known as Onuris or Hnhwr in Egyptian) was an ancient Egyptian deity associated with war, hunting, and the protection of the pharaoh. He was often depicted as a man with the head of a lion or a hawk, holding a spear or a bow, symbolizing his role as a warrior and protector. Anhur was particularly venerated in the city of Thinis, where he was considered the patron deity. His name translates to "He who fights" or "He who repels," reflecting his martial attributes. In the context of Egyptian mythology, Anhur was believed to protect the sun god Ra from the serpent Apep during his nightly journey through the underworld. The Greeks identified Anhur with their god Ares, and he was also associated with the Nubian god Apedemak. Anhur's cult was prominent during the Middle Kingdom and New Kingdom periods of ancient Egypt. In Hebrew, Anhur is sometimes transliterated as אנחור, though there is no direct translation. In other languages, Anhur is known as Anhor in Latin and Anur in Coptic.
