Urd (Old Norse: Urd, "fate" or "that which has happened") is one of the three Norns in Norse mythology, often referred to as the most important of the trio. The Norns are female figures who control the fate of the gods and all other beings. Urd, along with her sisters Verdandi and Skuld, dwells at the Well of Urd (Old Norse: Urdarbrunnr), a sacred spring associated with destiny and wisdom. The name Urd is often translated to Hebrew as עבר (pronounced "Avar"), which means "past." In German, Urd is sometimes referred to as Urdr or Wurd, and in Old English, the concept is reflected in the term wyrd, which also signifies fate. Urd is depicted as weaving the threads of fate, symbolizing the inevitability and interconnectedness of past events. Her role is pivotal in Norse cosmology, as she represents the past and the foundational aspects of destiny that shape the present and future.
