Suleiman the Magnificent

Suleiman the Magnificent, also known by his Turkish name Kanuni Sultan Süleyman (قانونی سلطان سليمان), was the tenth and longest-reigning Ottoman Sultan, ruling from 1520 until his death in 1566. In Hebrew, he is referred to as סולימאן המהממנט. The epithet "the Magnificent" was given to him due to the grandeur of his reign, which marked the apex of Ottoman power and prestige. Suleiman is also known as Suleiman I or Suleiman the Lawgiver (Kanuni in Turkish) for his significant contributions to the legal system of the Ottoman Empire. His reign was characterized by significant territorial expansion, including the conquest of Belgrade, Rhodes, and most of Hungary, as well as the two unsuccessful Ottoman sieges of Vienna in 1529 and 1532. Under his rule, the Ottoman Empire reached the zenith of its military, economic, and cultural power. Suleiman's reign also saw a flourishing of the arts and architecture, with notable figures such as the architect Mimar Sinan contributing to the empire's cultural legacy. His reign is often considered a golden age in Ottoman history.
