Shwe Nabay (Burmese: ရွှေနဘေး; MLCTS: *Hrwena.bhe:*) is a traditional Burmese musical instrument, a type of oboe. It is a double-reed wind instrument made from bamboo or wood, and is known for its distinctive, penetrating sound. The Shwe Nabay is an essential component of the hsaing waing (orchestra) in Burmese classical music, often playing the melody alongside other instruments. The instrument's name translates to "golden nipple" in English, reflecting its cultural significance and the ornate decorations often found on its body. In Thai, it is known as pi nat (ปีนัด), and in Khmer, it is called spoe aor (ស្ពឺឱ). The Shwe Nabay is typically played in ceremonial and religious contexts, as well as in traditional theatrical performances. Its unique timbre and expressive capabilities make it a vital part of Myanmar's rich musical heritage.
