Roog

Roog is a term used in the folklore of the Serer people of Senegal, The Gambia, and Mauritania to refer to a malevolent spirit or demon. The concept of Roog is central to Serer religion and cosmology, where it is believed that these spirits can cause harm, illness, or misfortune to individuals or communities. The term "Roog" can be translated to Hebrew as רוג (pronounced "roog"), although it does not have a direct equivalent in Hebrew or other Semitic languages. In Wolof, a language widely spoken in Senegal, the term is written as Ròòg. Roog are often associated with natural phenomena, such as storms or diseases, and are believed to be capable of possessing humans. Traditional Serer priests, known as Saltigues, play a crucial role in identifying and addressing the influence of Roog through various rituals and ceremonies. The belief in Roog underscores the Serer people's deep connection to the spiritual world and their efforts to maintain harmony and balance in their lives.
