Plum

A plum is a stone fruit produced by the subgenus Prunus of the genus Prunus. The subgenus is distinguished from other subgenera (peaches, cherries, bird cherries, and others) in the shooting of the spring, their "pits" (endocarps), and the structure of the flowers. Plum is also the name of the species Prunus domestica, which is the most widely cultivated species of plum. The fruit is juicy and can be sweet or tart, clingstone or freestone. It is round to oval, and typically has a groove running down one side and a smooth, waxy skin. The flesh is firm and juicy when ripe, and the skin is thin, and can be red, purple, or yellow in color. Plums are often used in cooking and baking, and can be dried to produce prunes. In Hebrew, plum is called שזיף (shazif). In French, it is called prune, in German it is Pflaume, in Spanish it is ciruela, and in Italian it is prugna. Plums have been enjoyed by humans for thousands of years and are native to the Northern Hemisphere, with many species and cultivars found throughout Europe, Asia, and North America. They are a good source of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, and are often consumed fresh, canned, or dried.
