Oligarchy

An oligarchy (from Greek ὀλιγαρχία (oligarkhía), from ὀλίγος (olígos) 'few' and ἀρχή (arkhé) 'rule') is a form of power structure in which power rests with a small, elite group distinguished by royalty, wealth, family, military control, or political belief. The term derives from the Greek word "oligarkhía," which translates to "rule by a few." In Hebrew, it is referred to as שלטון אוליגרכי (shiltón oligárchi). In Spanish, it is called oligarquía, in French oligarchie, and in German Oligarchie. Oligarchies often exclude most of the population from power, either by lack of political representation or by the exclusion of large segments of society from membership in the ruling group. Throughout history, oligarchies have taken various forms, including rule by a few wealthy families, a small group of military leaders, or a select group of political elites. In modern contexts, the term can refer to political systems where a small group of people holds a disproportionate amount of political power, often due to their economic influence or control over key institutions.
