Nehanda (also known as Mbuya Nehanda) is a revered spirit in the Shona religion and culture of Zimbabwe. In Shona, the term Mbuya translates to "grandmother," reflecting the ancestral and spiritual significance of Nehanda. The spirit of Nehanda is deeply embedded in the history and resistance movements of Zimbabwe, particularly during the First Chimurenga (1896-1897), a major uprising against British colonial rule. Nehanda is often associated with the spirit mediums who played crucial roles in rallying the Shona people against colonial oppression. The spirit is believed to embody the ancestral wisdom and power, guiding and protecting the community. In other relevant languages, Nehanda is known as Nehanda in Ndebele and Nehanda in Chewa. The legacy of Nehanda continues to be a symbol of resistance and cultural identity in Zimbabwe.
