Nader Shah (نادر شاه, Nāder Shāh; נאדר שאה, Nader Shah; Надир Шах, Nadir Shah; Nadir Şah; 1688–1747) was one of the most powerful Iranian rulers in the history of the country, reigning from 1736 until his assassination in 1747. He was the founder of the Afsharid dynasty, which succeeded the Safavid dynasty in Iran. Nader Shah is often remembered for his military genius and the expansion of the Iranian empire to its greatest extent since the Sassanid Empire. His campaigns extended Iran's borders to the Caucasus, Central Asia, and parts of India, making him a dominant figure in the region. Despite his military successes, his reign was marked by both admiration and controversy due to his harsh methods and the immense wealth he amassed, particularly from the plunder of Delhi in 1739. His legacy remains significant in the history of Iran and the broader Islamic world.
