Jyotish Shastra (Sanskrit: ज्योतिष शास्त्र), often referred to simply as Jyotish, is the ancient Indian science of astronomy and astrology. The term Jyotish is derived from the Sanskrit word jyotis, meaning "light," and shastra, meaning "science" or "doctrine." It is one of the Vedangas, or auxiliary disciplines of the Vedas, and is considered one of the oldest astrological systems in the world. Jyotish Shastra encompasses various branches, including Nimittachara (omens and portents), Siddhanta (astronomy and cosmology), Samhita (astrology and predictive techniques), and Hora (horoscopic astrology). It is used for predicting events, understanding planetary influences, and determining auspicious times for ceremonies and activities. In Hebrew, it can be translated as חוכמת הכוכבים ההודית (Hokhmat HaKokhavim HaHindit). Other relevant translations include Jyotish Vidya in Hindi and Jyotisha Shastra in Tamil. The practice of Jyotish Shastra remains influential in Hindu culture, particularly in India, Nepal, and among Hindu communities worldwide.
