Jihad

Jihad is an Arabic word (جهاد) that literally means "struggle" or "strive". In a religious context, it refers to the effort a Muslim exerts to fulfill God's commandments. This can take many forms, including the struggle to improve one's moral and spiritual self, the struggle to improve the society around one in terms of justice and kindness, and in some interpretations, the struggle to defend Islam and Muslims from oppression and aggression. The term is often translated into Hebrew as ג'יהאד (pronounced "jihad"), and into other languages such as Spanish (yihad), French (djihad), and German (Dschihad). It is important to note that the concept of jihad is complex and multifaceted, and its interpretation and application can vary widely among different Muslim scholars, cultures, and historical periods. In contemporary discourse, the term is often associated with armed struggle, but this represents only one interpretation among many.
