Isaiah 96

Isaiah 9:6 is a well-known verse from the Book of Isaiah in the Hebrew Bible, often cited in Christian theology, particularly in relation to the birth of Jesus Christ. The verse, in the original Hebrew, reads: "כִּי יֶלֶד יֻלַּד-לָנוּ בֵן נִתַּן-לָנוּ וַתִּהְיֶה הַמִּשְׁרָה עַל-שִׁכְמוֹ וַיִּקְרָא שְׁמוֹ פֶּלֶא יוֹעֵץ מַלְאַךְ עֵל אֶלֶּה אֲבִיעַצְרוֹ" (Ki yéled yulád lanú ven nítan lanú vatíyeh hamishrá al shikhmo vayikrá shmo péle yoetz, malach el elleh avieatzro). In English translations, it is commonly rendered as: "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace." This verse is part of a larger prophecy in Isaiah 9:1-7, which speaks of a future ruler from the Davidic line who will bring justice and peace. The verse is significant in Christian theology as it is seen as a messianic prophecy fulfilled in the birth of Jesus, as referenced in the Gospel of Matthew (1:22-23). The names and titles given to the child in this verse—Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace—are interpreted as describing the divine nature and eternal reign of the Messiah. In other languages, the verse is translated as "Porque un niño nos es nacido, hijo nos es dado, y el principado sobre su hombro; y se llamará su nombre Admirable, Consejero, Dios fuerte, Padre eterno, Príncipe de paz" in Spanish, and "Denn ein Kind ist uns geboren, ein Sohn ist uns gegeben; und die Herrschaft ruht auf seiner Schulter; und er heißt Wunderrat, Gottheld, Ewigvater, Friedefürst" in German.
