George Gordon Meade (December 31, 1815 – November 6, 1872) was a career United States Army officer and civil engineer best known for defeating Confederate General Robert E. Lee at the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863 during the American Civil War. Meade was born in Cádiz, Spain, to American parents, and graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1835. He served with distinction in the Mexican-American War and later as a civil engineer before rising to prominence during the Civil War. Meade commanded the Army of the Potomac at Gettysburg, a pivotal battle that marked a turning point in the war. After the war, he oversaw the military reconstruction of the South and later served as commander of the Division of the Atlantic. In Hebrew, George Meade is known as ג'ורג' גורדון מיד, in French as George Gordon Meade, and in German as George Gordon Meade.
