The term gematria is derived from the Greek word geōmetria (γεωμετρία), meaning "geometry," reflecting the numerical calculations involved. In Hebrew, the word gematria is often translated as חישוב גימטריא or חישוב גימטריא. This practice assigns numerical values to Hebrew letters, which are then used to find hidden meanings or connections between words, phrases, and concepts. Gematria is a significant part of Jewish tradition and has been used for centuries in various forms of Jewish scholarship, including Kabbalah. It is also found in other cultures and languages, such as Arabic (known as ʿilm al-ḥurūf or ʿilm al-jummal) and Greek (known as isopsephia). The practice involves adding up the numerical values of letters in a word or phrase to find a corresponding numerical value, which can then be compared to other words or phrases to uncover hidden relationships or meanings.
