El Chupacabras is a creature that originated in Puerto Rican folklore beginning in the mid-1990s, and is often described as a reptilian or hairless canine-like being which is said to attack and drink the blood of livestock, especially goats. The name comes from the Spanish for "goat-sucker" (literally "the goat sucker"). In Hebrew, it is known as אל צ'ופקברס. The creature is also known as Chupacabra in English, Chupacabras in Spanish, Chupacabra in French, and Chupacabras in Italian. The reports of El Chupacabras have been often attributed to misidentified animals, such as coyotes, dogs, and foxes, or to cases of animal mutilation caused by natural predators or scavengers. The legend of El Chupacabras has become a popular subject in folklore, urban legends, and popular culture, inspiring numerous books, movies, and television shows.
