Caleb son of Jephunneh (Hebrew: כָּלֵב בֶּן יְפֻנֶּה, Kalev ben Y'funeh) was a prominent figure in the Hebrew Bible, known for his role as one of the twelve spies sent by Moses to scout the land of Canaan. The name Caleb is often translated as "dog" in Hebrew, though it is also associated with the meaning "faithful, wholehearted." In the Septuagint, the Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible, his name is rendered as Κάλεβ (Káleb). Caleb is notable for being one of only two spies, along with Joshua, who brought back a positive report about Canaan and encouraged the Israelites to trust in God's promise of the land. Due to his faithfulness, Caleb was rewarded with a portion of the Promised Land, specifically the region of Hebron (Joshua 14:13-14). This narrative is found in the books of Numbers (13:1-16:35) and Joshua (14:6-15) in the Hebrew Bible.
