The Buchis (also known as Bakhis or Bakhit) was an ancient Egyptian deity, often depicted as a bull or as a man with a bull's head. The name Buchis is derived from the ancient Egyptian language and can be translated to Hebrew as בוכיס. In Greek, the deity is known as Bouchis, and in Latin, it is referred to as Buchis. The Buchis was particularly revered in the city of Armant (also known as Hermonthis) in Upper Egypt, where it was associated with the cult of the goddess Renpet. The Buchis bull was considered an incarnation of the deity Montu, a falcon-headed god associated with war and royalty. The Buchis bull was selected based on specific physical characteristics and was kept in a temple, where it was treated with great reverence. Upon its death, the Buchis bull was mummified and buried in a special necropolis, with its successor chosen to continue the divine lineage.
