Banastre Tarleton (1754–1833) was a British Army officer who served in the American Revolutionary War. He is known for his controversial tactics and his role in some of the war's most notable events. Tarleton's name is often associated with the Banastre Tarleton's Legion, a mixed cavalry and infantry unit he led during the conflict. In Hebrew, his name can be translated as בנסטר טארלטון. In French, he is referred to as Banastre Tarleton, and in German, his name is Banastre Tarleton. Tarleton's reputation is marked by both his military prowess and the brutality of his actions, particularly the massacre at the Waxhaws, which contributed to the hardening of American resistance. His legacy remains a subject of historical debate, with some viewing him as an effective commander and others as a symbol of British excesses during the war.
