Ayman al-Zawahiri (Arabic: أيمن الظواهري, romanized: 'Ayman aẓ-Ẓawāhirī; 1951 – 2 August 2022) was an Egyptian Islamist who served as the leader of al-Qaeda from 2011 until his death in 2022. Born into a well-known Egyptian family, al-Zawahiri became a prominent figure in Islamist and jihadist movements, eventually becoming the second and last emir of al-Qaeda after the death of Osama bin Laden. He was known for his involvement in various militant activities and his role in the September 11 attacks, which led to his inclusion on the United States' list of most wanted terrorists. Al-Zawahiri's leadership of al-Qaeda was marked by a continued emphasis on global jihad and opposition to Western influence in Muslim countries. He was killed in a U.S. drone strike in Kabul, Afghanistan, on August 2, 2022. In Hebrew, his name is transliterated as איימן א-זוואהרי (Ayman a-Zawahri).
