Amaterasu (天照, Amaterasu, lit. 'she who shines in heaven') is the Shinto sun goddess and the most important deity in the Japanese pantheon. She is considered the direct ancestor of the Japanese imperial family and is enshrined at the Grand Shrine of Ise (Ise Jingu). Amaterasu is often depicted as a woman with long, flowing hair, holding a bow and arrows, and is associated with the sun, light, and life. In the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, the oldest historical records of Japan, Amaterasu plays a central role in the myth of the creation of Japan and the establishment of the imperial lineage. The Hebrew translation for Amaterasu is אמטראסו. In Chinese, she is known as 天照大神 (Tiānzhào Dàshén), and in Korean, she is referred to as 아마테라스 (Amateraseu).
