Aconitum napellus, commonly known as monkshood, wolfsbane, or blue rocket, is a species of flowering plant belonging to the genus Aconitum within the family Ranunculaceae. The plant is native to mountainous areas throughout Europe and western Asia, typically found in moist, shady locations. It is a herbaceous perennial that can grow up to 1.5 meters (5 feet) tall, characterized by its dark green, palmate leaves and striking blue, purple, or white helmet-shaped flowers. The name "monkshood" refers to the shape of the flower, which resembles the hood of a monk's cowl. In Hebrew, the plant is known as אָקוֹנִיטוּם (akonitum) or צִיצִית הַנָזִיר (tzitit hanazir, literally "the nazirite's tassel"). In German, it is called Eisenhut, which translates to "iron hat," while in French, it is known as aconit napel. Aconitum napellus is highly toxic, with all parts of the plant containing potent neurotoxins, including aconitine, which can be fatal if ingested. Historically, it has been used in traditional medicine and as a poison, but its use is now largely restricted due to its dangerous nature. The plant also holds cultural significance, appearing in various myths, legends, and literary works.
