Ahmad Fadeel al-Nazal al-Khalaayleh, commonly known as Abu Musab al-Zarqawi (Arabic: أبو مصعب الزرقاوي, Hebrew: אבו מוסעב אל-זרקאווי), was a Jordanian militant Islamist who founded and led the terrorist group Jama'at al-Tawhid wal-Jihad, which later became part of al-Qaeda in Iraq. Born on October 30, 1966, in Zarqa, Jordan, al-Zarqawi became one of the most notorious figures in modern jihadist movements. He was known for his extreme violence and opposition to both Western influence and Shia Islam. Al-Zarqawi's group was responsible for numerous high-profile attacks, including bombings, beheadings, and other acts of terrorism, particularly during the Iraq War. His brutal tactics and ideological stance made him a significant target for international counter-terrorism efforts. Al-Zarqawi was killed on June 7, 2006, in a U.S. airstrike in Iraq, marking a notable turning point in the conflict.
